Anything You Want is a book by entrepreneur and all-around cool guy Derek Sivers. Derek is most popularly known for his company CD Baby. Since selling it he has branched out to become a speaker, author, and even make a few appearances at TED. His personal website is a library of information with links to great articles and notes on books he has read.
Now the book. Derek always has the user in this case the reader in mind. Unlike most business books Anything, You Want is short and to the point. Its not overloaded with statistics and case studies, long personal reflections, just to point. The book is meant to be read in one day. It reads like a conversation with Derek over tea.
Derek Siver’s philosophy is simple what is best for the customer is what’s best for the business the rest will fall into place.
Another point he makes toward the beginning of the book is that we all take on to much. And if you’re not saying Hell Yeah about something, then say no. Do something powered by the passion you have for it or don’t do it. This is something a bit more detailed in the book The Power Of Less, and Crush It, also favorites of mine.
Lastly, I think Derek sends a clear message throughout his book that YOU are in control of your business. You, the CEO and you can do whatever you want even if that means: keeping things small, hiring friends, working long hours, working short hours, treating your customers right, and doing things the way you want not the way everyone tells you, you should and you have to.
