2nd Place
(Total reading time 1 minute)
Today was the second to last 5k for the Long Island Road Runners summer run series. The weekly race that runs through the summer usually attracts anywhere from 150-200 runners per race. This evenings race was plagued by bad weather drawing out only 22 participants.
Within the first two minutes of the race everyone running the course was soaked by the rain.
In each race I try as best I can to pull away from the crowd as early as possible and find other people running at my pace. I do this not really with winning in mind because I know I am not the fastest runner on the course (I hope to be some day). I do this more as a way of finding my pace and personal space. I find it very uncomfortable to run jammed between people or behind someone that slows you down to a crawl. In this race I followed the same plan and by the first mile had taken a 2nd place position. Around turns I looked for the path with the least amount of puddles and tried to avoid getting my feet wet wherever possible. After the first mile I felt I was dragging around more water in my shirt then I had drank in the last week, so I took it off while I was running, throwing it to the side. Running in the rain is not as bad as it seems. Getting your feet wet while running sucks but the rain keeps you cooler then would normally be.
Near the end of the 3rd mile some started getting a bit closer to me. I pushed through the never ending pain in my side and finished with a time of 22:26. 1st place for my age group and 2nd place over all and first for my age group. As I crossed I never would have imagined that I could even come close to placing that far up.
Thats all I have to say.

Back On Track
(Total reading time 1 minute)
Another wednesday, another 5k.
I had missed out on last weeks 5k to celebrate my niece’s arrival. The week before that I ran but it wasn’t pretty. One of my worst times this year, mostly due to the fact I was still getting over the past weeks sick spell and the side effects of some hard core antibiotics.
Todays race went much better. One of my younger brothers Josh came out for the race and finished not to far behind me. I ran this race with the Vibram Five Fingers of course (I use the KSO model) and finished just under 23:00 minutes. It was a good race. Settling into your pace is always the toughest part. It is always about listening to your heart and learning it’s rhythms.
Im still on a quest to get under 22:00 minutes by the end of the season.
Thats all I have to say.

Still freakin sick.
These are my current symptoms:
Headache right in the sinuses. (Killed most of that with some excedrine migraine)
Now that is out of the way some sort of sinus thing seems to be unleashing itself.
Extremely tired and fatigued. I ran 22:41 5k last wednesday and I dont think I could walk 1 mile right now.
Fever that fluctuates from gone to 102, 103 at times but doesn’t stay their (Been trying to keep this under control with Advil)
A Bit of dizziness here and there once my sinuses fill up. (Been trying to combat this with Sinus Spray which clears my breathing.)
I’ve also started doing the sinus to throat snort trying to stop bad crap from getting any place else.
It feels like I might be progressing from a run down dehydration to a sneak attack by the sinuses. Which is no surprise. I could have foot fungus or break my arm and some hoe have a sinus problem start.
On to tomorrow. At this point I think I will not be participating in my weekly 5K on wednesday even if I do get better. I really don’t want to tax my body when I am weak and cause more problems.
Thats all I have to say.
BTW For those of you how comments both here and on facebook page. Thank you so much.

Swimming.
(Total reading time 1 minute)
First day in the pool. I have been putting off this day for a long time although I am not exactly sure why. It didn’t completely suck but it was everything I always have remembered swimming to be from the naked old man walking around in the locker room to the feeling of anxiety as I swam into the deeper water to the anxiety of feeling out of breath. I guess you’ve got to start some place. I did a bunch of 25 meter swims and then did 1 lap in the 50 meter lanes which cross “The Deep End” and as I saw the water get deeper below me I got more nervous swimming faster and getting tired more quickly, on the return trip I was so out of breath I had to flip over and resort to the back stroke as I watched the lifeguard starting to pay attention.
What bums me most about it is that I have been running for a while now, I am in pretty good shape, my 5k time is under 23 minutes. I got in the pool, swam 25 meters and felt like a 10 years older completely out of shape. Like I never exercised at all. Humbling to say the least. Trying to work my way up to doing a 500 meter open water swim for a sprint triathlon. Tell you one thing after I got out of the pool I was glad I didnt register for the race yet LOL.
They say the first step is always the hardest.
On another note yesterday I set a new 5K personal best again finishing the race at 22:41. I am still trying to get my time under 22 minutes before the summer is over. At this point is it starting to come down to my pace and being consistent. My first mile yesterday was 7:05. At that pace I didn’t feel like I was going to die so my goal is to work on getting a consistent 7:00 mile throughout the entire race which would bring me in at about 22 minutes.
That’s all I have to say,

A New Personal Record for my 5K
(Total reading time 1 minute)
Yes it’s Wednesday again and that can only mean one thing, its 5K time. I’ve been running a 5K race every Wednesday since the first week of May. Today I reached a new personal best with a time of 23:01. This is the fastest I have ever run a 5K since I began running almost 3 Summers ago. I am slowly but surely picking up speed. Today’s race was the first 5K I have run in the Vibram Five Fingers. I have been wearing them for short 10-15 minute runs 2-3 time a week for the last 3 months. My feet and lower legs are still getting used to them. I can not begin to explain how much of a difference they will make in your running if you are willing to give them a chance and get used to them. (Note: It isn’t pretty at first. You haven’t walked on your feet the correct way since you were born. Running like a Cave Man can take a bit of get used to). Last week I ran the same 5K course in a pair of traditional running sneaker and finished about a minute and a half slower. Its not just the shoes but they are a huge help. Today as I made my way through the first mile it was much easier to find a relaxed pace where I was moving along but not breathing to hard. I ran the first mile at about 7:15 with out feeling overly tired. Last week’s first mile was 7:30 and I felt a bit more winded. As the race continued I felt like I was running at a more comfortable pace. Running a 5K is all about pace and being able to feel what gear you are in physically. Can’t wait to keep running.
Oh and for those of you who don’t run I met a man name Charlie today who is 70 years old and takes no medications. Something to make you go hmmmm. Thats all Im saying.

Another Wednesday another 5k. Today’s time was 24:18. I finished 34th out 100 people. Not bad for the 90 degree heat. Since I’m doing this post mobile I’ll keep short.
Thats all I have to say.

Running
(Total reading time 1 minute)
Todays usual 5K race at Eisenhower Park was modified from to a 5k to a 3 mile run consisting of 3 one mile loops. While a 5K is just a bit more then 3 miles, 3.1 actually, that extra .1 does make a difference. Although the weather turned out to be beautiful, the original 5K was altered because of a pending “Tornado Warning” Long Island does not get Tornado’s. Yes, they have happened in the past but in general it is a very rare occurrence. The run itself was good. I finished with the clock at 23:17. I spent the race trying to stay at a consistent pace which is much harder then it sounds. I also tried holding back a bit during the first mile. Like every novice runner, I always start a bit to fast. One of things that I love about running a 5K or longer is it forces you to get to know your body , its limitations and different levels of performance. With a little experience you start to realize when you can push more out of yourself or more importantly how to find the spot just below your threshold of pain and stay there. For my weekly 5K’s I also run with no music. I find the tempos of the song begin to influence my pace. I do like to run with music sometimes but when the clock is running I leave it behind. One of my long term goals is to venture into the sport of Triathlon. One of the rules for this sport is that you can not run or bike with earphones or an ipod. Better to get myself used to the silence now. And while I am on the subject of silence….
Thats all I have to say.

5K number 2 at Eisenhower Park, NY
(total reading time 2 minutes)
The 2nd 5k of the Eisenhower Park summer series is done. I won’t have my official time until tomorrow because of a computer problem but I know I finished some place just under 24 minutes for an all new personal best. I’l post my official time tomorrow. The conditions for this race where much better then last week. The temperature was in the low 60’s and not too windy, but breezy in spots. I hit my first mile at about 7:30 and kept a fairly consistent pace from there. The last mile my running partner was the pain in my right side. As I passed the 3 mile mark the time was just over 23 minutes. I yelled inside myself, pushing away the pain and finished out as strong as I could. In the last .2 miles I was able to pass at least another 2-3 people, squeezing past the finish line under the 24 minutes mark. The summer has just begun and my running time has improved drastically from last year, I still have a few tricks up my sleeve. I know getting in under 23 minutes is going to be tough, it might take me the whole summer to accomplish but as long as I am moving forward and continuing to challenge myself all is good.
Just got the official time: 23:53. Not bad.
Here is a picture from last weeks race.

Thats all I have to say.
