Got my Google Cardboard VR headset from Amazon today.
First impressions. Very cool. It feels like there are still some obstacles with the technology, especially when implemented with a smartphone, however, there is some huge potential for this device in the hands of the right developers. The biggest issue I have found so far is good content. It doesn’t feel like enough companies are focus time on developing for it. I could be wrong because I do not really know this space in the development or gaming world. Google Street view is really awesome. With user submitted 360 photos you can go different places around the world and look around in full 360 view.
Of the different apps I tested I enjoyed the google cardboard demos the most. There was also a Shark VR experience that was pretty cool but to short. Either that or the app is buggy and it just doesn’t go any further.
As a learning tool it’s possibilities are endless.
The biggest downside I see with Google Cardboard is that it is so cool, that our curiosity it stuck in a bottleneck of technology. You have this thing on your head, and you are seeing all these things, but your other senses want to experience them as well. You are left wishing you could touch something or walk, physically moving your feet to get closer.
