Talk to anyone about music marketing or marketing in general and all you will hear is Social Media this… Social media that. You have to get your music on social media they say, its the only way. Then indie artists spend countless hours and dollars working on their Social Media Profile on Facebook, Twitter, ect, creating a music video, and ….drum roll… ultimately nothing happens. Why? This plan almost always fails because they do not market to the right Social Network. The demographics of Social Media users is very different from network to network. I have linked to a some statistics on the different Social Media Networks and their user base. Ask where are your fans? Even If your are not an artist this rule still applies. Find out what network people in your industry use and make that your main focus. Put your effort where your fans are. Before you create content spend sometime doing research.
Create your “perfect fan”.
What genre of music do they listen? (this will be easy of course)
What other similar artists do they listen to?
How old are they?
Are they Male or Female?
What else do they do?
Where do they go?
Do they buy music or do they stream it?
If they Stream music, where do they stream music from? Spotify, Pandora, Google, Youtube?
What social network do they use?
After your create your “perfect fan” go find them.
