Swimming.
(Total reading time 1 minute)

First day in the pool. I have been putting off this day for a long time although I am not exactly sure why. It didn’t completely suck but it was everything I always have remembered swimming to be from the naked old man walking around in the locker room to the feeling of anxiety as I swam into the deeper water to the anxiety of feeling out of breath. I guess you’ve got to start some place. I did a bunch of 25 meter swims and then did 1 lap in the 50 meter lanes which cross “The Deep End” and as I saw the water get deeper below me I got more nervous swimming faster and getting tired more quickly, on the return trip I was so out of breath I had to flip over and resort to the back stroke as I watched the lifeguard starting to pay attention.

What bums me most about it is that I have been running for a while now, I am in pretty good shape, my 5k time is under 23 minutes.  I got in the pool, swam 25 meters and felt like a 10 years older completely out of shape.  Like I never exercised at all.  Humbling to say the least.  Trying to work my way up to doing a 500 meter open water swim for a sprint triathlon.  Tell you one thing after I got out of the pool I was glad I didnt register for the race yet LOL.

They say the first step is always the hardest.

On another note yesterday I set a new 5K personal best again finishing the race at 22:41.  I am still trying to get my time under 22 minutes before the summer is over.  At this point is it starting to come down to my pace and being consistent.  My first mile yesterday was 7:05.  At that pace I didn’t feel like I was going to die so my goal is to work on getting a consistent 7:00 mile throughout the entire race which would bring me in at about 22 minutes.

That’s all I have to say,
