(Total reading time 1 minute)
Earlier last week I read and reviewed “The Pearl” by John Steinbeck. John Steinbeck’s writing style felt very honest and direct. I immediately made the decision to read more of his work. Although I would love to read the Grapes Of Wrath I have been on a novella craze. I have begun to embrace the shorter form of novel writing because it gets to the point. Some novels just drag on a bit to far and interest begins to fade. In the library I picked up a copy of The Red Pony and also A Cup Of Gold which I am reading now. The Red Pony is a very difficult book to explain. It reads more as a collection of short stories that revolves around the same family then it does a novel. I could have done without the story where the father in law comes to visit. The parts of the book in which the plot revolved around the boy and his horse were my favorite. There were parts in the book that were surprisingly graphic compared to the sometimes innocent feeling tone John Steinbeck wrote with. Like The Pearl, John Steinbeck’s ending, although foreshadowed was still unexpected.
If you are looking for s short read over the summer, this small book will fit into your pocket on the way to the beach. Enjoy.
Thats all I have to say.
